WBL Workshop #5 (Senior Year)

Job Search Tips Video:
The purpose of this video was to demonstrate what to avoid doing during a job interview. The video highlights 4 important things the video highlights not do are: coming in late for the interview, being brutally honest, having a bad attitude, and being unprofessional. You don't want to be late since it keeps your employer hanging and it creates a bad impression right off the bat when you want to be leaving a good one. Being brutally honest by saying things like you're in it for the salary or you're completely clueless on how to do something may create the wrong idea of yourself in your employer and makes you look like you have no depth to yourself. Having a bad attitude doesn't sit well with employers since they're hiring people to be representatives of their brand and if you have a bad attitude, that's how you're gonna treat customers and represent the brand. Being unprofessional creates a bad representation of yourself and in the minds of your employers, if you can't create a good representation of yourself, you can't represent the company well. This information is important in helping me find a job since it helps me avoid making mistakes that hinder my ability to land one. Making a good impression during the job interview is vital to your chances at employment as it's how your employer gets to know you and if you're a fit for the company. If you make the mistakes above, you create a bad impression of yourself and makes it less likely that your employer will trust you to be at the company, so it's important to know what to avoid doing.

Elevator Pitch Video:
The purpose of this video was to give us advice on how to deliver a good elevator speech to different types of people. An important point the video makes is that the purpose of an elevator pitch is to set up a better time to meet/talk, get the contact info for someone involved in the hiring process, or to open up a constructive conversation that leads to an interview or next step. Elevator pitches do 4 things: identify who you are/what you do, what makes you unique, your goals, and your call to action. When you identify yourself, in addition to giving your name, you describe a job you've been doing or something you've been studying in college that is relevant to the job you're applying to. What makes you unique is some trait of yours that makes you different from other candidates. If you did an exceptionally good job in an internship or won some competition that demonstrates your excellence in the job you're applying for, you can use it for this. Your goals describe your professional aspirations, such as getting a job in the company you're applying for. The call to action is usually a question or action that is meant to help you get closer to your goal. If you're with someone from HR, you might hand them your resume and ask what type of candidate they're seeking whereas if you're with a company employee, you might hand them your business card and ask if they know someone who would be useful to you. This information is important in helping me find a job since it helps me expand my network and get in contact with people who can help me get the job I want. I can apply for a job online and leave it at that but that just makes me like any other applicant. An elevator pitch helps me stand out and advertise my personal brand. It helps me get closer to getting the job I want by finding the right people and making myself an appealing candidate to them.

Mock Interview Video:
The purpose of the video was to give us insight into the type of questions we might be asked in our interviews and what those questions are looking for. The video goes over many questions but one that was quite significant to me was "What are your hobbies?". I used to think that to answer this question, you must respond with a hobby that absolutely has something to do with your job but the video told me that the point of the question was to see if you're a well-rounded individual. The video advised against focusing solely on one job and instead show your multiple interests. Employees who are well rounded often contribute better to the company so this question is an opportunity to show how well versed you are in other things that can contribute to the company. Another question that was significant to me was "Were there any questions you were hoping to be asked?". I've never seen this type of question before and if asked, it's a great way to help make yourself unique and showcase something that makes you stand out. If there was some accomplishment of yours that you think makes you an outstanding candidate, such as winning a competition of some sort, you can use it to talk about it and tie it into why you're the best candidate for the job. Lastly, I found the video's advice on a question I'm already familiar with helpful, "Tell me about yourself". I already knew the question is meant to reveal your professional background and how you would help the company but the video had brought to my attention something I hadn't realized before, this question can essentially be answered with your elevator pitch. This means when you're creating your elevator pitch, you should have this mind in question so that you have a better idea of what you should say in your elevator pitch and that you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone when using the pitch, either to get in contact with hiring personnel or to answer this question in an interview. This information is useful in seeking the job I want because it helps me do well in the interview process. Acing the interview is important in landing the job and you want to make the best out of your responses to the questions. Your responses are what set you apart and make you an appealing candidate so it's important to give the best answer you can.
