Senior Committee Volunteer Reflection

Over the course of the first semester of senior year, I volunteered for my high school's yearbook/senior committee. The senior committee is made up of a few seniors from the ITHS class of 2020 and is responsible for planning out events for the class of 2020 as well as putting together the year book. Some of my duties as a member consisted of taking photos for the yearbook, encouraging my peers to submit their own photos to the committee, participating in meetings planning senior festivities, and taking questions from my peers to discuss in committee meetings.
The experience of being on the senior committee revealed what event planning and organization is like. I had originally joined to design the yearbook using the skills I acquired from web design but I quickly learned that the design phase couldn't be started just yet. The reason for this delay was there was no content yet, such as photos, an the way to get content would have to be through actively acquiring it throughout the year, i.e. taking photos, and organizing events where good photos can be taken. In large part, the photos would dictate how the design of the yearbook would be so going ahead with design first wasn't a viable option. When planning events, we had to take the opinions of our audience, the seniors, into consideration as well as the budget, often times having to settle for a middle ground between the two. Doing things such as planning trips require a lot of research, including phone calls, and number crunching to see how much money to charge seniors or to take out of the budget. I see myself using knowledge from this experience in the future if I have to work for a company that plans many events.
